Since 1964 the Up series of films has documented the lives of fourteen people since the age of seven, and it’s one of the great achievements of cinema. The subjects are around 67 years old now, and the unfolding of their lives has, of course, also been the unfolding of ours, no matter when we started watching. That “ours” is broadly defined - if Up were beginning today its makers would pay more attention to socioeconomic, racial, and gender diversity. But it’s still an extraordinarily important work, with the serious intent of helping people reflect on who we really are, and especially the role of childhood in shaping the rest of our lives.
