KATHLEEN NORRIS ON AN UNDER-RATED GEM: THE LOOKOUT
For years I took my younger sister Rebecca to movies, and eventually I developed a good sense of what she might enjoy. When The Lookout, a thriller directed by Scott Frank came out, I wanted to see it mainly because it featured Joseph Gordon-Levitt, a young actor who had deeply impressed me in an earlier film, Mysterious Skin. (That’s not an easy film to watch, but it’s a brilliant and moving depiction of the after-effects of childhood sex abuse on two young men.)
In The Lookout Gordon-Levitt plays Chris, a man who has suffered brain damage in an accident. I had doubts about taking my brain-damaged sister to the film and told her about my misgivings. I said that if the movie made her uncomfortable we’d find another one.
